Sports Scholar Profiles and Testimonials

Maxwell Jones – Fencing

2023 – Present

In 2024 whilst studying at LSBU, Maxwell received his first senior call up to represent GB, having previously competed in the Junior teams. Maxwell travelled out to Shanghai in May 2024 for the FIE Grand Prix two-day event as part of the British 12 man squad, Max started off the event well, progressing out of the group stage and into the knockout rounds where he won his first round 15 points to 7. Maxwell finished inside the top 100 ahead of previous Olympic Medallists and scored the third highest placed British fencer at the event.

Prior to the event Maxwell said:

“I have recently been selected to represent Great Britain at the senior Grand Prix in Shanghai china. These events are the highest level of international fencing bringing together  past present and future Olympic medalists to compete, in order to gain points towards their world rankings. Countries may only send a maximum of twelve athletes to represent them and I’m am lucky to be amongst this small group. This will be my first experience fencing at such a competition so I’m really excited about getting to fight against this calibre of opponents and really test my abilities. this will hopefully be the first of many events that I can represent the nation for at a senior level and will look forward to trying to carry on my performance into the future.”

Maxwell has also previously represented LSBU at the British University National Championships.

Jennifer Eduwu – Athletics

2023 – Present

Following her performance at the BUCS (British University and Colleges Sport) Outdoor Athletics Championships representing LSBU, Jennifer received her first call up to the England Athletics Senior team. Jennifer represented England in the 4x100m relay, as well as also competing as a guest runner in the 100m individual event, finishing third in her final. She competed at the Loughborough International Athletics meet which is widely recognised as the opener to the outdoor season with past and present British Olympians competing at the Paula Radcliffe Stadium. The event invites teams representing England, Wales, Scotland, GB & Northern Ireland Under-20s and the National Athletics League to compete against each other as the outdoor season gets underway.

Jennifer said:

“Being on the England Senior athletics Team was a great experience, positive vibes all around as the coaches and team leaders were very supportive. It was nice to meet people in the track community as 100m is an individual event, but the relay is really a team effort so bonding with the girls on the team was lovely. I am also very pleased with my performance in the 100m, definitely heading in the right direction just need to stay focused and enjoy the journey along the way, as this is just the beginning”

Natalia Nestouri – Karate (Kumite)

2022 – Present

Sports Scholar Natalia Nestouri, student from the School of Law and Social Sciences, won a bronze medal at the 2023 Karate BUCS Nationals competition. Following her performance, she qualified for the European University Karate Championships in July and represented LSBU on the International stage.

LSBU Active recently supported Natalia’s transition to a new weight category for the 2024 BUCS National Championships. She said the following at the event:

“Today I had the chance to fight at BUCS Nationals and got 5th place, it was a new category for me, but I really enjoyed it and thank you so much to London South Bank and LSBU Active for giving me the chance to compete here”

Jeantique Hommel – Paraclimbing

2023 – 2024

“The LSBU sports scholarship has been so helpful, I am really thankful for the new opportunities it has given me! I have been able to train at climbing centres I usually wouldn’t go to because it’s too expensive on a typical budget without membership. I’ve also already booked onto a few competitions I’m really excited for. The costs of local comps has really increased and I’m relieved to be able to go to as many as possible this year, which wouldn’t be an option without the University’s support. There is one next month in Southampton that I’m really looking forward to, and I’ve been able to sort out travel arrangements with the scholarship too which is a worry off my shoulders. Overall it’s helped take a massive amount of pressure off me mentally, financially and health-wise, and therefore I’m able to cope better with my degree because I have so much of a weight taken off my shoulders. It’s also just really fun being able to do even more of a sport I love so much with extra freedom, especially before I go back on placement. Thanks so much LSBU!”

Ellis Miller – Canoe and Kayak

2020 – 2023

Ellis Miller whilst at LSBU was part of the British World Class Programme for Canoe Slalom where she competed regularly on the international stage. Whilst at LSBU she also represented the university at BUCS competitions claiming multiple national titles and medals:

At the 2023 Canoe and Kayak Slalom Championships Ellis said:

“Very pleased to have come away from BUCS matching last years result with a gold in the Women’s Canoe and a silver in the Women’s Kayak. Was great to be back in Nottingham on the start line representing London South Bank University – and a massive thank you to LSBU Active for all their support”

She has most recently claimed a Bronze medal as part of Great Britain’s C1 Womens senior team at the 2024 European Canoe Slalom Championships in Tacen, Slovenia. Ellis is looking ahead with the aim to be selected for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Yasmin Miller – Athletics

2015 – 2017

Yasmin Miller is a previous scholar who competed at the highest level of Athletics whilst at LSBU. Yasmin is a previous BUCS record holder where she broke the BUCS 60m indoor hurdles record in 2017, which was only then surpassed in 2024, she has claimed multiple medals whilst representing LSBU as well as having represented England and Great Britain internationally on numerous occasions.

The 22-year-old from Canada Water had a number of ups and downs while representing Team LSBU at the 2017 BUCS Nationals, beating the Bucs Nationals record for 60m hurdles with a time of 7.22 seconds in the semi-final, and then narrowly missing out on the gold medal in the final by just 0.01 seconds. Then she followed up by claiming the gold in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.6 seconds a few months later at the outdoor championships.

At the event Yasmin said the following:

“I was really happy to win gold at BUCS, as I hadn’t won anything in two years,” said Yasmin.

“My training was good but my indoors hurdling in winter wasn’t my best season. Now I’m the fittest I’ve ever been.”

Whilst at LSBU Yasmin had a busy schedule taking her to competitions and meets in Belgium, France, and Poland throughout her final year, and with her final exams to think about as well, Yasmin acknowledged studying and training at the same time can take its toll.

“Balancing study and training, I know I have to use my time wisely. Sometimes I’m following up my training by going straight into exam revision.”

LSBU Active are always proud of how we can support students balance their sporting ambitions as well as their studies.

Ashley Facey – Table Tennis

2015 – 2017

Ashley Facey is a 2 time Paralympian and competed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Whilst at LSBU Ashley was selected to compete in the Rio 2016 games, competing in the Class 9 Individual and 9-10 team. It was a huge milestone for the 21-year-old at the time, who had made his international debut in 2009 and won his first National title in 2014. Along the way Ashley also secured medals for LSBU at the BUCS National Table Tennis Championships.

At the time, Iain Killoughery, Senior Operations Manager LSBU Active, said: “We’re delighted that Ashley has been given the opportunity to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 2016 Paralympic Games. This is such an incredible achievement and he is fully deserving of his place in the games. We will all be behind him and are looking forward to watching him showcase his talents.”

With Ashley stating: “Words can’t describe how I feel to have the opportunity to represent GB at a Paralympic Games, especially for my Mum and my family and everyone who has helped me. This is the biggest day of my life. I’m really excited but I’m going out there to do a job and represent my country so I’m going to enjoy the experience but also do what I need to do which is play my best table tennis and give it 100%.”

Following his graduation from LSBU Ashley went on to be selected for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, becoming a 2 time Paralympian.
