LSBU Active Scholarship Programme is an exceptional opportunity for talented students to achieve their full potential.

Our programme is designed to support individual sport athletes performing at senior international level, with a strong professional profile in their chosen sport.

As a scholarship recipient, you will receive support to help you excel both academically and in your athletic pursuits.

Benefits of Becoming a Sports Scholar:

  • Financial Support: Sports scholars can receive up to £1500 financial support per annum, as well as assistance in competition travel and entry.

  • Sports Science Support: Eligible for an amount of free sports science support in the Human Performance Centre (HPC) at LSBU. HPC offers support in sports physiology, sports biomechanics, sports psychology, sports nutrition and strength and conditioning.

  • Personal Development Officer and Academic Support: Access to a development officer, who acts as a link between the athlete, academic division, and University Authorities.
    They will support you and help you balance your commitments. Academic support is also available in the form of funding resources such as textbooks or IT equipment.

  • Free Sports Therapy Massage

  • Free Access to Sports Talks & Workshops: LSBU Active runs a series of coaching and training workshops. All scholars will have access to these sessions for free.

  • Free LSBU Active Wear: Sports Scholars are entitled to free Sports Scholarship Programme leisurewear.

  • International Travel Opportunities: Opportunities to enter competitions abroad, part funded as part of your scholarship.

Application and Assessment Process:

  • Complete and submit application form studentsport@lsbu.ac.uk 
  • Review the scholarship information found here
  • LSBU Active Management will review applications
  • Short listed applicants will be invited for an interview
  • Scholarship winners will be notified

Applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis by LSBU Management. To ensure you have the best application, ensure all sections of the form is completed in full for your application to be accepted. Incomplete forms cannot be accepted. A reference from a national/club coach must be provided and with any supporting evidence submitted before the deadline. Any application received without reference and supporting evidence will not be accepted.

Sports Scholar Profiles and Testimonials

Current Scholars

Maxwell Jones – Fencing

Max is no stranger to the scholarship programme here at LSBU, now in his 3rd year on the programme. Since joining LSBU, Max has gone from strength to strength, having been called up to the GB senior squad at the end of his first year, subsequently winning LSBU Active’s sportsperson of the year in 2024.

To say Maxwell competes globally is an understatement, having competed across 3 continents last year as part of the World Cup and Grand Prix series, and in the last 12 months, having been selected for 6 World Cup events by GB.

Domestically, Max has also shone on an individual level, finishing in the top 8 at the recent UK Open and winning the British team championship with his club. Alongside this, Max has also been representing LSBU at the highest level, where last season he claimed a silver medal at BUCS Nationals and looks onwards as he aims to represent GB students at the next FISU World University Games.

We are excited to continue supporting his journey as he continues to impress at a senior level following his outstanding years within the junior age groups.

Efosa Imatitikua-Davidson – Athletics

Efosa joined us this year on a Quantity Surveying apprenticeship and is an exceptionally gifted athlete on the track. Last season, he had a remarkable year, breaking into the top 10 of the U20 British rankings and reaching the finals of all three major championships in his age group. He placed 4th at both the England U20 Indoor Championships and the ESSA English Schools Championships, and 6th at the England U20 Outdoor Championships.

Now stepping up into senior age groups, we’re excited to see Efosa take that next step in his development and continue progressing as an athlete.

Karmen Bruus – Athletics

Another student to join our roster of Athletes within track and field is Karmen, this time taking to the field in High Jump. Karmen is an incredibly talented athlete, and her list of accolades goes well beyond those on screen.

Karmen had her breakout year in 2022 when she took home Gold in the U20 World Championships and followed this up with an impressive qualification and 7th place finish at the senior world championships that same year, where she also equalled the U18 World Record.

Her performances have continued past 2022, when she then went on to get back on the podium at the 2024 U20 World Championships with a Bronze Medal.

Kacper Polszaj Gwiazdowski – Taekwondo

Kacper has already won silver wear for LSBU in his first year as a Sports Scholar, having won Silver at the British Student Autumn Championships in 2025.

Much like some of our other scholars, Kacper is now transitioning into the senior age categories following what has been a strong junior performance over the past few years. Kacper is a two-time British Junior Champion, where he won Gold at both the 2023 and 2024 events, as well as medalling at multiple international Junior events.

Kacper’s aims for this season are to become a multiple-time medallist at the British student championships and gain selection to the EUSA Games representing LSBU on a European stage.

Max Moore – Shooting

Our 2nd Max on the Scholarship programme for 2025/26 is Max Moore, who represents one of the more unique sports on our roster. Max competes in Rifle Shooting across all three disciplines, Short Range, Long Range and Full Bore.

An experienced shooter, Max has been involved in the sport for some time, being a two-time gold medallist in the Commonwealth European Division in 2022, as well as a multiple-time senior national and international medallist during his career.

Max has already started to represent LSBU within BUCS, with the Short-Range competition already underway. We are excited to see how he gets on across the full breadth of the sport this season with his longer-term aim to represent LSBU at the next FISU World University Games.

Michael Tomlinson – Jiu Jitsu

Michael Tomlinson will represent the first Jiu-Jistu Scholar we have had at LSBU. Although the type of Jiu-Jitsu Michael competes in may not currently be a BUCS Sport, we endeavour to support those students who still compete at the highest level outside of a university environment. And Michael represents this, having recently claimed a Silver Medal at the 2025 UK ADCC Open, the most prestigious No-Gi event domestically.

Following his success at the ADCC Open, Michael aims to compete at the European Championships being held next February.

Michael is also a big advocate for the sport of grappling, where he also supports and co-delivers our new Grappling society and is hopeful for a boom in the sport here at LSBU. We look forward to seeing how he progresses on the mat as well as how far we can all take grappling here at the University.

Vasiliki Nestouri – Karate

In her second year on the Scholarship programme, Vasiliki has already experienced what university sport is about, having competed at BUCS Nationals last season alongside her sister Natalia, a previous LSBU Sports Scholar.

Vasiliki is involved in the Greek national programme and has been a multiple-time Medallist at various Greek National Championships, showcasing her calibre competing on a national stage in her home nation of Greece.

In 25/26, Vasiliki will once again represent LSBU at BUCS Nationals and hopes to improve on her performance last season, where she reached the quarterfinals of her category.

Zhihe (Mike) Zhang – Athletics

Mike has only been involved in the sport of athletics for the past couple of years and has shown great promise for a newcomer to the sport. Competing across all sprint formats, from the 60 meters through to 400 meters, he is a versatile athlete with big sights on the future. Having won a series of London-based events, Mike is looking to progress with targets this season to reach a BUCS Final and aims to achieve a BUCS Medal and selection to the Chinese National team.

The scholarship scheme will help Mike with his training camps abroad with his warm weather camp scheduled in the US during the Spring, a great platform as he builds towards the May BUCS Outdoor championships.

Previous Scholars

Jennifer Eduwu – Athletics

2023 – 2025

In the summer of 2024, Jennifer took the spotlight at the English Athletics Championships, clinching the U23 100m English title. This win marked both a significant milestone in Jennifer’s career and led to her second selection for the England Senior Athletics Team, where she was part of the 100m relay team at the Manchester International. Here, she secured another gold medal as part of the England team.

In summer 2025, Jennifer went on to represent GB Students at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games in both the 100 and 200m. She successfully reached the semi-final in the 100m.

Jennifer also represented LSBU multiple times at the BUCS Outdoor and Indoor Athletics Championships, where she secured a BUCS Silver medal at the 2025 outdoor championships.

Eva Kutman – Athletics
2023 – 2025

During her time as a student, Eva competed in Pole vault and represented LSBU at a series of national BUCS competitions. At the 2025 BUCS Indoor Championship, she secured a bronze Medal for team LSBU. Eva also competed in LSBU colours at multiple BUCS Outdoor Championships.

Whilst a student, Eva also had a fantastic season competing as an Estonian National athlete when she secured the 2024 U23 Estonian national title.

Natalia Nestouri – Karate
2022 – 2025                                            

Natalia was part of the LSBU Active scholarship programme for the 3 years she studied criminology at LSBU. Throughout her journey, Natalia successfully represented London South Bank University at several prestigious events. She won a bronze medal at BUCS Nationals in 2023 and then went on to represent LSBU at the 2023 European University Combat Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, where she competed against the best universities from across Europe.

Ellis Miller – Canoe and Kayak
2020 – 2023

Ellis Miller was part of the British World Class Programme for Canoe Slalom whilst at LSBU. She competed regularly on the international stage and represented the University at BUCS competitions, claiming multiple national titles and medals.

She has most recently claimed a bronze medal as part of Great Britain’s C1 Women’s senior team at the 2024 European Canoe Slalom Championships in Tacen, Slovenia. Ellis is looking ahead to be selected for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Yasmin Miller – Athletics
2015 – 2017

Yasmin Miller is a previous scholar who competed at the highest level of Athletics whilst at LSBU. She broke the BUCS 60m indoor hurdles record in 2017, which was only then surpassed in 2024. She has also claimed multiple medals representing LSBU, as well as having represented England and Great Britain internationally on numerous occasions.

The 22-year-old from Canada Water had some ups and downs while representing Team LSBU at the 2017 BUCS Nationals, beating the BUCS Nationals record for 60m hurdles with a time of 7.22 seconds in the semi-final, and then narrowly missing out on the gold medal in the final by just 0.01 seconds. Then she followed up by claiming the gold in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.6 seconds a few months later at the outdoor championships.

Ashley Facey – Table Tennis
2015 – 2017

Ashley Facey is a two-time Paralympian and competed at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Whilst at LSBU, Ashley was selected to compete in the Rio 2016 games, competing in the Class 9 Individual and 9-10 team. It was a huge milestone for the 21-year-old at the time, who had made his international debut in 2009 and won his first National title in 2014. Along the way, Ashley also secured medals for LSBU at the BUCS National Table Tennis Championships.
