Join us at LSBU as we celebrate our fantastic student sport volunteers – Elisha Dawes and Jeantique Hommel with their efforts at ‘SEND Festival’ back in May. Read about their fantastic experiences below! (Pictured: Jeantique Hommel, a Postgraduate student volunteer with the School of Health and Social Care).

Elisha Dawes:

Elisha is a first year Sports Ambassador who has volunteered on variety of schemes as a volunteer to further her experience and support local sports provision. As a volunteer Sports Ambassador, Elisha has worked on upwards of five sports projects in her first year of study at LSBU, including academy groups of the LSBU Family with the Day10 Sports Festival. The aim of our sports development initiatives is to create projects and pathways that make LSBU a local asset for community sport in Southwark, as well as providing rich experience and professional development to students to boost their employability.

LSBU Active have used National Volunteers Week to build an inclusive culture that is people centric, empowering students to develop their social capital with great access to opportunities.

Elisha, First Year, School of Law and Social Sciences; “Being a sports ambassador has given me the opportunity to not only work with different school programs such as Harris Westminster and the primary school program Rising Stars, which has allowed me to take more understanding into gaining leadership skills and organizational skills. To anyone out there, I would recommend being a sports ambassador because it allows you to open yourself to different opportunities that you may not have access to.”

Jeantique Hommel:

On Friday the 17th May, LSBU Active took part volunteering with Bankside Open
Spaces Trust & Access Sport. These are both sports-based charities supporting
recreation in Central London for those with disabilities.
The event focused on children who were deaf, disabled or neurodivergent to
engage with various sports with specialist coaching and an awards ceremony by
the Deputy Mayor of Southwark.

Our Volunteer: Jeantique Hommel, School of Health and Social Care
Jeantique is a postgraduate student with the School of Health and Social Care,
as well as an LSBU Active scholar as a Para-Climber. Each academic year,
students with sport scholarships at LSBU Active volunteer as part of their sport
services support package.

Through the development of local active partnerships, students at LSBU Active
can take full advantage of supporting the local community sports programmes.
Local sports networks also give our students real world impact, as well as
contributing to LSBU Student success to give rich experience for our graduate.
“It was really lovely and the kids and staff were amazing!” Jeantique Hommel
