LSBU Active’s Summer of Sport
As LSBU students take a break from their academic studies, LSBU Active have partnered with Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST) for the summer to deliver a vibrant community sports offer for children in the local community.
With this partnership, students have applied themselves with work-based learning as sports coaches with LSBU Active’s Sports Ambassador Scheme, delivering the after-school sports curriculum and more recently, the BOST Summer Sports Camp running from the end of July and throughout August. Students have been given the opportunity to lead and deliver the programme at Marlborough Sports Garden, becoming an integral workforce for local charity groups
In total, twenty-one sports ambassadors have worked at Marlborough Sports Garden with Bankside Open Spaces Trust from April – August, which has provided more than 650 hours of paid work for LSBU students. A key success to the programme is BOST supporting with the scale of the sports programme and celebrating our Sports Ambassadors as a unique selling point for service delivery.
Key Highlights
An Olympic summer meant for a celebration of sport and with the Change Makers Initiative with BOST, students had the opportunity to meet and learn from Canoe Slalom, silver medallist, Adam Burgess. A fantastic opportunity to inspire our LSBU students, giving advice and insight into skills required to excel in their chosen discipline.
Sultan, School of Law and Social Sciences, 1st Year:
“A very genuine person and was extremely friendly. It makes you think that it is possible for even someone like me to maybe make it into the Olympics or succeed in whatever you do in life”.

Alba, School of Health and Social Care, 1st Year: “Camp has been such an amazing experience for me being able to do what I love for the summer whilst getting paid. Being part of a team as a sports ambassador has been great for me to improve my leadership and coaching skills and open to new experiences at LSBU with opportunities to fund my coaching qualifications and apply this to to my studies.”
Elisha, School of Law & Social Sciences, 1st Year:
“My graduate prospects are to become a primary school teacher, and working on the summer camp has helped me adapt my ability to teach & coach effectively. Working as a Sports Ambassador has been great at developing the necessary skills to apply to my career.”
Gee-oh, School of Business, Postgraduate:
“As a recent master’s graduate, being able to test and implement skills as a team leader has been an exciting opportunity. I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity to work with children and encouraging them to pursue new sports is fulfilling. I’ve been able to mould the sessions on the camp to my own interests and experiences at LSBU. Seeing this provides evidence of the impact we have on these children and how important of a job it is to help inspire local young people.”
