Day 10 Project Success
On Tuesday 19th December, LSBU Active hosted an end of term Sports Day for local primary schools neighbouring our Southwark Campus as part of our Day10 Project. It was a fantastic celebration of sport and community cohesion in the build up to schools finishing for Christmas.
What’s Day10 Project? This is a scheme to support South Bank University Academy secondary school students learn outside of the classroom, showcasing extra-curricular activities by learning the theoretical and practical concepts of sports coaching, with the vision to lead their own sessions to primary school pupils after a 6-week programme designed by LSBU Sports Ambassadors.
LSBU Active hopes that engaging in the local school sports network can transform our students and local organisations to pursue the many avenues in sport and to show them what life is like at a university. LSBU Students have taken lead delivering this project working as Sports Ambassadors, with the objective of developing a highly engaged workforce to support their aspirations with professional experience and achieving a graduate level job.
Rising Stars Gymnastics
Our Rising Stars Gymnastics School has reached its conclusion for 2023, but not before welcoming all parents and guardians to attend our awards ceremony and a chance to for the children to show off their unique floor routines. It was an early Christmas celebration where all class members received their university certificate in gymnastics, presented by our British Gymnastics coach, Adamos.
The Rising Starts programme run by LSBU Active offers a basketball and a weekday and weekend gymnastics programme. We’re delighted to see our children’s activity programme grow, as we continue to develop partnerships in the local community to celebrate the benefits of health and wellbeing with local opportunities.
Our children’s sports programme for 2024 if available online with a variety of sessions to keep local families active!

Day 10 Project
As the opening term of the school year finishes ahead of the Christmas Holidays, LSBU Active will be hosting a School Sports Day as part of our enrichment opportunities with students from South Bank University Academy (SBUA) to take part and lead on their own coaching sessions as part of their extra-curricular offer. The aim of the programme is to host a sports day for SBUA students to teach primary schools local to Southwark before the Christmas Holidays begin.
The project has also been invaluable to our Sports Ambassador Scheme with our student-staff who have lead the way hosting seminars and practical coaching workshops with students in preparation before the sports festival. We’re delighted to partner with a variety of schools and showcase to school pupils what it’s like at a London university. Our Sports Ambassadors have taken invaluable professional development experiences from the scheme which we hope can build their portfolio as they continue their studies and career prospects.

Member Spotlight: Dzidek
Congratulations to Dzidek Sabat on completing the 2023 London Marathon.
Dzidek, who described himself as a “couch potato” just a few months prior, decided to sign up for the marathon as a challenge to himself and to prove that he was able to do it at his age of 46. With little running experience at all, he embarked on a 12-week training programme. The transformation that subsequently took place is what Dzidek is most proud of. “There has been a complete change in my mindset and lifestyle. I no longer describe myself as that ‘couch potato’, but instead now as an Athlete. Thinking like an Athlete. Eating like an Athlete. Training like an Athlete.”
Dzidek was incredibly pleased with the facilities here at LSBU Active, saying that the equipment is very modern and provides very cool features. For example, the centre has two Skillmills which are an impressive product with innovative technology. They were an integral part of his training routine and was utilised for his interval runs, lactate runs as well as sled-push exercises. He was also full of praise for the LSBU Active team and the lovely atmosphere here at the centre. “I felt the support from all the members here and that’s what makes LSBU Active different to other places, it made my training that bit more enjoyable.”
Dzidek has found a new lease of life and is now training for his next races, a cycling event and then a marathon in Valencia, Spain. He left us with three key tips for anyone who might be considering a marathon: firstly, “start slowly and gradually build up the mileage”; secondly, “read and improve your knowledge on how to train for a marathon”; and most importantly, “follow the training programme exactly and do not do any less or more than it says.”
