On Tuesday 19th December, LSBU Active hosted an end of term Sports Day for local primary schools neighbouring our Southwark Campus as part of our Day10 Project. It was a fantastic celebration of sport and community cohesion in the build up to schools finishing for Christmas.

What’s Day10 Project? This is a scheme to support South Bank University Academy secondary school students learn outside of the classroom, showcasing extra-curricular activities by learning the theoretical and practical concepts of sports coaching, with the vision to lead their own sessions to primary school pupils after a 6-week programme designed by LSBU Sports Ambassadors.

LSBU Active hopes that engaging in the local school sports network can transform our students and local organisations to pursue the many avenues in sport and to show them what life is like at a university. LSBU Students have taken lead delivering this project working as Sports Ambassadors, with the objective of developing a highly engaged workforce to support their aspirations with professional experience and achieving a graduate level job.

Natalia Nestouri: Karate

“Hello my name is Natalia Nestouri I’m a professional karate athlete and champion as well. I fight for Greece and UK. I’m a student at lsbu and I’m really thankful to LSBU active that gave me the big opportunity to be one of their Scholars. Because of them it is easier to go to BUCS and to European Championships because one of the benefits to be a scholar is to get an amount of money twice a year and also to pay for BUCS and European Championships. But the most important is the support that you are getting from all the people of LSBU active!”

Douglas Aikman: Athletics and Cross Country

“I have been an athlete for 14 years, starting from entry-level, moving to junior events and now I compete as a senior athlete. I initially started out multi-eventing, developing a range of skills, before focusing on distance running, where I am today. Running has allowed me to become part of a large community of like-minded people, where I have met people from every walk of life, passionate about the sport. I have been able to grow my confidence through working as a team in competitions. It has taught me to keep working hard despite setbacks, and to never give up. I study Urban and Environmental planning and I know LSBU was the right place for me to study. The course has been really engaging with brilliant lecturers. I am enjoying expanding my knowledge of planning with hopes of one day being able to work in the planning sector. The scholarship will allow me to represent LSBU in a sport I love. It will give me a chance to compete in events against other athletes and universities, which without the scholarship I would not have the chance to do.”

This week we saw our BUCS Wednesday give way to an LSBU Active Christmas Social for our Sports Club members, Just Play members and Sports Ambassadors. We celebrated the festivities with a Netball tournament officiated by our very own netball team and social table tennis for all to get involved in. This gave students the opportunity to try new activities, get physically active and meet other students, taking a positive break from studies. There was great turn-out from our student cohort and was a chance to celebrate our students for their achievements this season so far.
