LSBU Active support Movember

We have now come to the end of our Movember fundraising period, and we are incredibly proud of everyone who took part with £2359 so far being raised, with more still coming in! We are incredibly proud of our students here at LSBU and the sports club they represent. So, we wanted to shoutout some stories during their campaign.

A number of our sport club members gathered together on Saturday 18 of November in their ‘Bakerloo Hobble’, setting off from Harrow and Wealdstone station at 10am finishing off their walk at Elephant and Castle that evening at 6pm. And what was the catch, they were dressed as Elephants to make things a bit more interesting. We had a number of other fundraisers in the month of November with the Mens Rugby Club doing a karaoke night at the SU bar; as well as our Netball Club hosting a ‘Battle of the Balls’ here at LSBU Active, with members from all our sports clubs coming down to partake in a mixed netball tournament.

Our top 2 fundraising teams are our Womens Football Club who raised a whopping £1165 with our Mens Rugby Club raising £658.40, and like we said before, money is still coming in!

We want to give a huge thanks to everyone involved including the staff who also raised some money along the way. We are very proud of everyone involved for raising such a large amount for a wonderful charity.

We are now almost the halfway point of the BUCS and LUSL season. Fast approaching the winter break, 64 fixtures have been played this season across our 10 clubs and 14 teams! We want to give special mentions to all our clubs who represent LSBU on a weekly basis.

Shoutouts must go to our Mens Football and Basketball 1st teams who currently sit top of their leagues, unbeaten so far this season. We wish them all the best in their next set of fixtures as they push for promotion.

If any student is interested in joining a student sports club, we would love to have you! And your first session is always free to try!

LSBU SPORTS SCHOLAR WINS CANOE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TWICE OVER

LSBU graduate Ellis Miller credits LSBU’s sport scholarship programme as crucial in allowing her to perform at the highest level in her canoeing career.

Alongside her teammates, Ellis managed to take gold in August’s U23 World Championships in Krakow, Poland.

Recovering from third down and a 2-point penalty, the U23 team, comprised of Ellis, Phoebe Spicer and Lois Leaver, remained steadfast and composed to post a time of 98.55 – a performance proving too difficult to beat for competitors.

Hear from the winners below:

Only a month later, Ellis received a late call up to the adult 2023 ICF World Championships in September. Held in her home ground of Lee Valley, Ellis stormed to gold alongside her teammates Mallory Franklin and Kimberly Woods, executing a perfectly clean run through 18 gates for a blistering time of 112.45 seconds.

As an LSBU sport scholar, Ellis would have regular discussions and check-ins with her support team (including the LSBU Active sports scholarship team, her lecturers, and her performance lifestyle advisor). She credits the support as a huge part of how she managed to achieve a first-class honours degree alongside her athletic success. The financial support allowed her to travel to and from university to the British Canoeing High Performance Centre, as well as contributing to new equipment.

She has now qualified for the British Senior C1W team (‘C1’ being the type of canoe, and ‘W’ indicating it’s the women’s team). She said:

“I am delighted to have qualified for the Senior C1W team after a tough selection series this weekend. I can’t wait to race on the International senior circuit in 2024.”

What is Canoe Slalom? In Canoe Slalom you must navigate the white-water rapids, avoiding penalties (2 seconds if you touch a gate, 50 seconds if you miss a gate) to paddle through the slalom poles in the fastest time.

Read more about Ellis’ university experience at LSBU.

Applications for the sports scholarship for the 23/24 Academic year are now closed but we welcome new students for the 24/25 Academic year.

On Sunday 12 March, the LSBU cheerleading team competed in the British Cheerleading Association University Nationals competition.

One of the team members, Gee-oh Ho (student in the LSBU Business School and Sports Ambassador) said: “I am extremely proud of our cheer team as it was the first time for most of us even doing cheer, let alone performing a fresh routine in front of hundreds of people. It took a lot of commitment and courage, and we were able to perform the stunts with no errors”.

The LSBU cheerleading team has 22 members, and 19 students were involved in the competition. It’s an open and inclusive team for students of all abilities and brings students together in an exciting and growing sport at LSBU. They train twice a week in the new LSBU Active facilities with a fantastic coach to support their development and have received brand new training and competition kit this year.

LSBU Active supported Year 8 students from South Bank University Academy in the first Sports Festival as part of the Day 10 project.

LSBU Active has led a six-week programme of activities as part of the Day 10 initiative, and the final project was for the Year 8 South Bank University Academy students, supported by the LSBU Sports Ambassadors, to deliver a Sports Festival to primary school children.

Over the course of the six-week programme, LSBU Sports Ambassadors have delivered sessions on how to coach, sharing key skills and knowledge, and the Year 8 students also engaged in Applied Science, testing sessions and gym introductions.

The sports festival was a great success with 61 children taking part from local primary schools. They learnt new sports games, made new friends, and had the chance to visit the brand-new sports facilities at LSBU Active. The students also got the opportunity to share the knowledge they have developed throughout the project.

For our Sports Ambassadors, this has been a great experience, the project was able to align with their academic studies and add to their portfolio.
